Schererville was founded in 1866 by Henry Scherbius, who emigrated from Germany in 1846. He purchased 80 acres (32 ha) of land and platted the town, which he named after himself. A post office has been in operation at Schererville since 1867. The Schererville Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
